Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), a disciple of Ramakrishna,
is considered to be a saint of enormous caliber.
He came to international attention at the World
Parliament of Religions at the Chicago World's Fair
in 1893. At the time, he was only thirty years old.
Being a speaker who was both charismatic and brilliant,
he gained immediate success and recognition.
Along with his spiritual genius and an extraordinary
intellect, he traveled throughout America and Europe,
fashioning a contemporary vision of the Vedanta
philosophy for western audiences and the modern
world.
Returning to India in 1897, Vivekananda established
the Ramakrishna Mission in Calcutta along with an
order of monks to regulate and guide the mission.
In 1899 he returned to the United States and gave
a number of lectures in Los Angeles and San Francisco,
which summarized his views on the Vedanta.
Throughout his stays in America, Swami Vivekananda
established the Vedanta Society of New York and
the Vedanta Society of Northern California in San
Francisco.
Returning to India, he died on July 4, 1902. His
letters, poems, writings and lectures have been
arranged in nine volumes.
